Well, let me tell you it’s not exciting nor is it sexy.

It’s not even cool!

But it’s an important service for our customers especially when they need a set of aircraft placards super fast…

Being a placard manufacturer doesn’t stop there either.

Larchfield has been producing placards forever and now we do it with our eyes shut.

Not literally with our eyes shut otherwise quality control is in trouble.

What I mean by that above statement is that placard manufacturing is our bread and butter business which runs like clockwork.

This means we do get to do the sexy stuff too but more on that in a moment…

In terms of placard manufacturing, there isn’t much we cannot do, creating everything from standard life vest under your seat on Lexan products for Airbus meal trays to customised transparent 3M placards for G6000 veneer oak tables.

Alongside all of this is a plethora of burns tested materials we have either in stock or can source in a short space of time.

So like I said nothing there’s sexy about placards.

However.

We pride ourselves on the fastest lead times for manufacturing and shipping.

It’s always the same feeling as I walk up the stairs to board an aircraft, I’m excited but at the same time slightly nervous to fly.

I take my seat glance around the aircraft then out of the window and something amazing catches my eye…

The NewZealand Air special All Blacks livery.

It’s a beautiful piece of art and sends a new surge of emotions through my mind and body.

Mostly it makes me want to fly on that aircraft!

The man next to me notices what I’m looking at as he lowers his head to get a better view.

We converse the whole flight.

Two strangers talking about the brilliance of aircraft livery.

Many years before working in the aircraft industry I did a fair amount of travelling and always founds airports incredibly boring places.

I was never one to hang around in duty-free I’d be fast-tracking it to the departure lounge to watch those planes consistently taking off and landing.

When one of those big birds come cruising in with a special livery on the fuselage it creates quite a stir…

Everyone pays attention and wants to know which airline it is?

Where’s it flown in from?

Where’s it going next?

Children exclaim they want to fly on that aeroplane pulling at their parent’s arm and when they do get to fly with that airline they make sure they get many pictures/selfies and spread it crazy on the socials…

Aviation Graphics especially promotional pieces is marketing 101 for savvy airlines.

So why is it still just a small percentage of them that create these amazing experiences in this ever visual world we live in?

Good question!

Maybe it’s the cost?

In recent times I’ve had a fair amount of conversations with air operators new and old about using vinyl on the exterior of their aircraft.

It surprised me to find that some of the well-known airlines didn’t fully understand the capabilities and benefits of using aircraft film.

Before anyone thinks we are against painting aircraft here at Larchfield this is simply not true as we have discussed before a few times in previous posts.

As far as we are concerned there’s a place for both techniques and we cannot deny that painting can produce a beautiful full gloss livery.

However…

Vinyl is especially beneficial for Aircraft Branding during wet leasing and for new start-up airlines because the cost is generally lower.

It is our understanding through conversation that in most cases lessors will require you to return their aircraft in the same condition as it was originally leased.

Quite rightly so and this presents a problem for some operators depending on the required livery design.

The main problem is that the aircraft needs painting twice, once to apply the desired livery design and then at the end of the lease to return it to original

Add in a small fleet and you have some escalating costs…

By using vinyl we can reduce those costs somewhat and here’s the kicker, vinyl is an excellent way to protect the original paintwork.

We can supply approved materials with 12-36 months warranty which give extra peace of mind that you’re doing everything you can to protect your investments.

And to top it off there’s not much you cannot do with vinyl these days, ability to install some pretty amazing colour schemes lies with the limits of your creative departments.

For the third year running Larchfield Aerospace & Graphics, has teamed up with Swiss Air & IAC to complete another amazing short term, promotional livery.

It took a little under 48 hours for Larchfield’s nine man team to carefully apply over 400 meters of special aircraft film in Genève, before returning back to the UK.

Everything was planned using military precision to ensure that the work was completed on time so that the aircraft could embark on its nine-month tour to 40 + destinations eventually carrying 150, 356 passengers along the way.

The design work was once again carried out by Mathias Forbach AKA Fitchtre and the final design was printed in the UK by Larchfield before being shipped out to Genève prior to the installation.

Needless to say, this was an exciting but challenging livery design and as you might expect working with something of this magnitude allows zero room for error. Even just a few millimetres out on the design at the application phase could have completely skewed the artwork.

It’s safe to say that material technology is getting better all the time and allows us to push the boundaries carrying out more and more complicated installations and, the added bonus for airlines is the comparative cost versus traditional painting. Something which would have previously meant a short term promotional project like this would have been extremely expensive and time-consuming if achievable at all, is now something very accessible to many airlines.

Needless to say, the amount of interest and attention these promotional designs attract for Airlines is well worth the investment.

With hundreds of vanilla white-tailed planes passing the airport lounge window every day, it’s not just for plane spotters, these promotional pieces brighten up everyone’s day and always make interesting conversation.

We can usually manufacture placards from IPC part numbers or at the worst case Images and dimensions with a typical lead time of 5-7 days.
